Just a short walk from Kumbali Country Lodge, is Nature’s Gift Permaculture Centre- a demonstration plot for Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology. The permaculture centre sits on 20 hectares of land and serves to demonstrate and promote solutions for food and nutrition security in Malawi and beyond.
In 2009 The owners of Kumbali Country Lodge, sited on Nature’s Gift Dairy Farm, donated the land and buildings for Kusamala Institute of Agriculture and Ecology to establish Nature’s Gift Permaculture Centre. They did so because they are passionate about Malawi’s potential to develop sustainably and with existing resources, and have been working towards increasing biodiversity by conserving and promoting a wide variety of indigenous fauna and flora on the farm for the last 15 years.
What is Permaculture?
Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems, which have the diversity, stability and the strength of natural ecosystems. It is the integration of land and people, supplying their food, energy, shelter and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without sustainable agriculture there is no possibility of a sustainable human culture.
Permaculture design depends on traditional practices of natural resource management, integrated with appropriate modern technology. This is a holistic, and environment friendly way of designing and building our human environments, as well as improving living standards. Permaculture design addresses housing, water supply, health, waste management, farming, energy, aquaculture, river restoration, forestry, animal husbandry and much more.
Nature’s Gift Permaculture Centre is a ten minute walk from the lodge. The staff, interns, and volunteers, appreciate visitors and would love to give you a tour; showing you that Malawi is indeed a rich country. To arrange a time for a tour, please contact reception who will arrange a date and time.
